[Olympic movement and international politics] : [a timeless relationship of conflicting coexistence] / Dionyssis Gangas

Gangas, Dionyssis

In this book, the writer analyses the three discrete time periods of the Olympic movement’s confrontational co-occurrence with the international politics’ attempts to intervene at sports. The first period begins with the revival of the Olympic Games and reaches the 2nd World War, the second one starts shortly after and concludes with the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the third period is currently the one we have been living in the last 30 years, with the political intervention being retreated gradually and the movement inverting the facts, while imposing its own terms in the relation between sports and politics. The enhancement of the Olympic movement’s role in the international political front-line as well as the gradual enforcement of its autonomy, are the main features of this new era.
